STRATEGIC ICT GOALS

The Committee on Information Technology (COIT)recommends funding IT infrastructure projects that impact multiple departments and are critical to the delivery of City services. COIT organizes ICT projects by primary strategic goal. The following section provides a details of each strategic goal and the types of projects included in each.

GOAL 1: SUPPORT, MAINTAIN, AND SECURE CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE

ICT infrastructure supports essential systems, much like the maintenance for roads and buildings. The City actively supports IT infrastructure projects that impact multiple departments and are critical to the delivery of City services. Over the next five years, departments have proposed 75 projects (of 158) that support critical IT infrastructure. Key objectives guide ICT infrastructure maintenance including: keeping downtime to a minimum, protecting systems from disruptive events, and adhering to strong strong cyber-security practices.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

GOAL 2: INCREASE EFFICIENCY & EFFECTIVENESS

The City highly values projects that will improve efficiency and effectiveness. In the modern workplace, city departments must be able to organize and track data digitally with online documents and digital workflows. Upgrading existing ICT systems will increase efficiency across the City.

 

Over the next five years, departments have identified 67 projects (of 158) that increase efficiency and effectiveness. Under the overarching goal of increasing efficiency, the City has also developed several key objectives including: simplifying and reducing IT procurement, supporting a mobile workforce, and deploying technology for green initiatives

GOAL 3: IMPROVE ACCESS & TRANSPARENCY

One of the City’s highest values is to make government accessible and transparent to residents of San Francisco. Information technology has the potential to make government services even more inclusive through easy-to-use websites and open data sharing. Over the next five years, departments have identified 16 projects (of 158) that address access and transparency. Key objectives to guide these projects include: making City data readily available, increasing internet access to underserved communities, and increasing internet connectivity.
